Coach Purse Value Guide Key Things to Know
Coach: A Complete Guide to the Brand in 2026
Coach is among the most recognizable brands in American fashion, and in 2026 its business is growing strongly. What began as a small leather workshop evolved into a handbag specialist, and the company now sells clothing, footwear and accessories through stores worldwide. Over the decades, its core formula has remained constant: carefully made leather goods priced below the long-established European luxury houses. As described by a federal court, this space is accessible luxury, separate from both mass-market fashion and true luxury.
Where Coach came from, its ownership and leadership, how big the business has become and what it sells are all set out in this guide. It also covers the difference between a full-price coach store and a coach outlet, a topic that regularly creates confusion. Every figure is dated to its source, and all prices should be read as observed market prices, not an official price list.
Coach’s Origins: A Manhattan Workshop Turned American Label
Coach traces its origins to 1941, when a small family-run leather workshop was set up in Manhattan. Six craftspeople working in a loft on 34th Street produced men’s wallets, billfolds and other small leather goods, according to Coach’s own account. Handbags and even the Coach name followed later, the name dating to about 1960 or 1961. Despite what is sometimes written, Miles and Lillian Cahn were not in fact the first owners of the workshop.
By around 1950, Miles was managing the factory, after joining the business alongside Lillian in 1946. In 1961 the Cahns bought out the original owners to take control. Lillian Cahn is said to have suggested adding women’s handbags, a move that transformed the company. The leather finish called glovetanned leather, based on the way a worn baseball glove softens with use, is credited to Miles Cahn.
The Bonnie Cashin Era
The designer most closely associated with early Coach is Bonnie Cashin, who served as its first lead designer. Cashin was not a co-founder of Coach, and she is reported to have served under contract rather than as an employee. Coach’s coach discount bags own pages list her first year as both 1961 and 1962, leaving a minor question about when she began. There is little question, however, that she kept designing for Coach until 1974.
The designer introduced the brass turnlock closure in 1964, and Coach says it was inspired by the toggle on the top of her convertible. Brighter colors, side pockets and coin-purse details are also attributed to her, and these touches relaxed the brand’s look. Even today, the turnlock stands as one of the most recognizable Coach details, and it can be seen on bags such as the Cassie crossbody.
From Sara Lee to Tapestry: A History of Owners and Listings
Sara Lee Corporation took over Coach in July 1985. Coach’s initial public offering came in October 2000, after which Sara Lee is reported to have exited completely the following year. Coach’s Signature collection, with the “C” monogram, debuted in 2001, so the pattern is a modern addition and not a mid-century heritage motif. The corporation, Coach, Inc., became Tapestry, Inc. on 31 October 2017, when its ticker moved from COH to TPR.
Only the parent company took on a new name, while the Coach brand, its stores and its products kept their names. Tapestry divested Stuart Weitzman to Caleres through a sale that closed on 4 August 2025, concluding an era that started when Coach, Inc. acquired the shoe label in 2015. Of the only two brands Tapestry owns in 2026, namely Coach and Kate Spade, Coach is by far the more substantial.
The Capri Deal That Never Closed
Tapestry announced on 10 August 2023 that it had struck a deal to buy Capri Holdings, the group behind Michael Kors, Versace and Jimmy Choo. The Federal Trade Commission challenged the deal in April 2024 and asked a federal court to halt it with a preliminary injunction. On 24 October 2024, a federal judge in the Southern District of New York approved that preliminary injunction. The decision did not settle the merits, yet it stopped the companies from closing the deal while the challenge played out.
An accessible luxury handbag segment, different from both mass-market bags and true luxury, was recognized as real by the court in its decision. On 14 November 2024, Tapestry and Capri terminated their agreement, explaining that the legal process was unlikely to conclude before their February 2025 deadline. The acquisition was never consummated, so Tapestry owns no Michael Kors, Versace or Jimmy Choo business.
Who Is in Charge at Coach Today
At Tapestry, the parent company, Joanne Crevoiserat holds the chief executive role. As Coach’s CEO and brand president, Todd Kahn runs the brand itself; he took the job on an interim basis in July 2020 and became its permanent holder in April 2021. The creative side rests with Stuart Vevers, whose appointment was announced in June 2013.
Vevers reportedly presented his first Coach collection in February 2014, and he continues as Coach’s creative director in 2026. His route to Coach reportedly went through Mulberry and then Loewe, where he was creative director. With Vevers in charge, Coach has drawn heavily on its archive, reissuing older designs as well as reworking vintage shapes into new bags such as the Tabby. His Fall 2026 collection was unveiled on 11 February 2026 at the Cunard Building in New York.
Coach in Numbers
To see how big Coach has become, look to Tapestry’s annual report for the fiscal year ended 27 June 2026. Tapestry overall recorded $8,004.2 million, including Coach’s net sales of $6,914.7 million, up 24% on the prior year. Coach, put simply, delivered approximately 86% of group sales.
Coach’s count of directly operated stores reached 973 at the end of that fiscal year: 336 in North America and 637 in international markets. Another figure in circulation, about 1,299 stores, counts every Tapestry store and not Coach alone. Tapestry also reported that the average unit retail price of Coach handbags grew at a mid-teens percentage rate during the year. The company has tied the increase partially to less promotional activity.

What Coach Sells: Bags, Clothing and Shoes
Handbags remain the heart of the business, and coach handbags today blend structured icons with soft, slouchy leather. Drawing on a 1970s archive shape, the Tabby debuted in 2019; the Rogue debuted in 2016 and came back in 2021; and the Brooklyn, a relaxed coach shoulder bag, launched in August 2024. The Empire Carryall was shown on the Fall 2024 runway and released in February 2025. Prices spanned a wide range: the Kisslock Frame Bag, said to have opened the Fall 2026 show, was observed at $350, whereas a Rogue 25 in alligator was seen at $8,000, the highest bag price observed. The Coach Originals line revives archive designs as newly made bags, so those pieces are not vintage.
Ready-to-wear is now a serious part of the offer, and coach clothing for Fall 2026 included varsity jackets in leather and in leather with wool, the brand’s first all-shearling varsity jacket, peacoats and suede coats. In the same show, Coach introduced blazers, flared trousers, A-line skirts, high-collar, floor-length dresses and all-gender jacquard knits. The fashion press reported loafers, clogs, booties and sandals for fall, and footwear also takes in sneakers such as the Soho Sneaker and the laceless Skate Sneaker. In addition, Coach oversees Coach (Re)Loved, launched in 2021 and reported to span trade-ins, restored bags and upcycled pieces, as well as Coachtopia, a circular-design sub-brand that debuted on 20 April 2023.
Shopping for Coach: Stores, Coach Outlet and Online
A full-price coach store carries the current collections, and the largest flagships go by the Coach House name. The New York Coach House on Fifth Avenue reportedly opened its doors in 2016, and a new Coach House at 645 Fifth Avenue has been reported as planned for 2027. Over in London, the Coach House on Regent Street also opened in 2016, and the brand is also available in the UK at Harrods, Selfridges and John Lewis. Whether you want a structured coach bag, a coach tote bag or a new jacket, the full-price range is the place to shop the latest season.
Coach Outlet is Coach’s own official outlet channel, comprising outlet stores and an official online outlet section on Coach’s own website. In 2014, Coach’s head of investor relations was reported as saying around 85% of outlet merchandise was produced for the outlet channel, but that figure is now dated, and Tapestry has since discussed bringing some full-price product into outlets. Claiming that outlet bags are always inferior, or indistinguishable from boutique bags, goes beyond the public evidence. In the UK, shoppers can find outlet stores at Bicester Village, Cheshire Oaks and Ashford Designer Outlet. People searching for the brand may type “couch” or “cosch”; in that case, check that any site promising huge discounts is really Coach’s own website or a known retailer.
